A 44 + Year Perspective!

Given recent events and the increased attention surrounding water recreation on Elkhorn Creek, we’ve received a number of questions about tubing—specifically, whether or not Canoe Kentucky offers tubing services. We want to take a moment to directly and transparently address this.

Canoe Kentucky does not and has not offered tubing on Elkhorn Creek in over 40 years.

This decision is not new, nor is it reactionary. It is a long-standing policy that reflects our deep commitment to safety, conservation, and the responsible enjoyment of Kentucky’s natural waterways.

As owners and operators of Canoe Kentucky, we believe tubing is not an appropriate or safe way to navigate the Elkhorn. Here’s why:

Elkhorn Creek is dynamic water—with frequent changes in water level, current speed, and obstacles. Conditions that may seem calm on the surface can quickly become dangerous for individuals without proper flotation, paddling ability, or awareness of moving water.
Tubes lack directional control, making it extremely difficult for users to avoid strainers, low-hanging trees, submerged rocks, and other hazards that are common throughout the creek.
We believe in equipping people with the right tools for a safe and memorable experience on the water. That includes proper vessels (kayaks, canoes, rafts), fitting PFDs, and education from trained professionals—none of which are typically associated with tubing.

Canoe Kentucky’s mission is to connect people to the water in a way that is safe, informed, and respectful of the environment. We are proud to stand by that mission, and while tubing may be popular in other locations or river systems, it simply does not align with the safety standards or stewardship values we hold for the Elkhorn.

FAQ questions

Is it safe?

Yes at the beginning of the day our staff will determine the weather conditions and plan the day accordingly for the paddling location and vessels. All of our staff are trained and take the care of each child very seriously. Life Jackets are required at all times and will be fitted to each child.

What is the plan for inclement weather?

If due to weather we are unable to get on the water, we have multiple backup plans including visiting multiple fun places around Frankfort such as the Fish Hatchery, or Ky history museum.

Do we accept YES cards?

Yes we do! In addition to normal payment we also accept a yes card as payment for this program.

What is the W.E.T Program?

The W.E.T Program is a six week, weekly paddling day camp for kids between the ages of 9-13, no experience necessary! Kids are able to learn the basics of paddling skills and safety while making friends and enjoying the outdoors in a fun and secure environment with knowledgeable and trained staff. Each Wednesday from 9am to 3pm kids can enjoy an adventure, exploring the Kentucky River or Elkhorn Creek weather and water permitting. In addition to a fun paddling experience kids can look forward to water games, swimming, making friends, and lunch on the banks of the water! Bring Your Own Boat to the Elkhorn Creek!

I own my own canoe or kayak, and I plan to come and paddle the Elkhorn Creek. What do I need to know?

If you have your own boats and want to access the creek on your own, directions can be gleaned from items 1. c. and 1. d., and for the longer trip, a few items from 2. Canoe Kentucky does not allow private boaters who have not purchased their boats from Canoe Kentucky, to access the creek at any of our private accesses. There are private accesses within 3/4 mile of each Canoe Kentucky private access.

Private boat options if you are in a group that has renting customers and someone (s) who had their own canoes, kayaks, SUP's or rafts:

FUN FLOAT - Knights Bridge to Canoe Kentucky
All renting customers must check in at Canoe Kentucky and ride the shuttle to our put-in location to participate in the safety briefing. DO NOT MISS YOUR SHUTTLE or you will have to catch the next one and delay your trip
Renting customers will exit the creek at Canoe Kentucky store. There is a large banner with name and logo on our back porch.
Personal boaters can stop for restroom, snacks, and info unless the area is congested. We have extremely limited access. Our exit process is in place to ensure safety and efficiency for our rental customers, equipment, and staff
Personal boaters park, unload their gear, and wait at American Whitewater. Elkhorn Acres (AW) access at 4235 Peaks Mill Rd., directly next door to the Canoe Kentucky access at Knight's Bridge.
This access is ~75 yards down stream on the same side of the creek that renting customers will access. Those at AW access will see renting customers get on the water just upstream.
At take-out time, personal boaters will paddle ¾ mile downstream to Peaks Mill bridge at intersection of 1264 & 1707. Exit to the right just as you go under the bridge.
If renting customers have a vehicle at our private parking (with approved pass,) they can pick up personal boaters downstream. If not, contact Robby’s shuttle service. The number for this is located at the bottom of this post.

ALL DAY ADVENTURE - Knights Bridge to HWY 127 Bridge - *halfway stop at Canoe Kentucky
Follow steps above excluding exit at Peaks Mill Bridge.
Renting customers will stop at Canoe Kentucky to check in with customer service and set a pick up time.
Renting customers and personal boaters can exit together at county owned access HWY 127 bridge. Private boaters will have to arrange their own shuttle.
Renting customers will ride the Canoe Kentucky shuttle back to the store for check out.

Reminder, Canoe Kentucky does not allow access to personal boaters at our private access locations. This includes:

-Forks of Elkhorn Access: 3866 Georgetown Rd

-Knights Bridge Access: 4245 Peaks Mill Rd

-Canoe Kentucky Store Access: 7323 Peaks Mill Rd

-Creekside Camping Access

2024 brings us innovation with several boat brands, and the new NRS Approach 120 micro raft is truly enticing. Our lead marketer and pro staff member John Bramel likes this craft. A lot. "It weights only 70 pounds, 160 pounds with a full setup," he said. "We're told it'll float in 3 inches of water. If Fall low water levels are the new norm for Kentucky's streams, then this will be quite the fishing tool."

The length is 12 feet; width is 49 inches. It's designed to easily slide into the back of a pickup truck.

Worried about durability? The Approach 120 is ultra durable. The weight/denier of the tube material, floor material and bottom wear patch makes this thing virtually bullet-proof.

There's an adjustable slot rail that's accessory compatible for things like YakAttack accessories. "Wait 'til you see your fly rod storage setup," said Bramel. "It's good."

Folding seats, dry box storage, internal anchor system, a bow angler molded thigh hook, "the design planning that's gone into this thing is impressive." The price, $4,994, compares to a fully loaded professional-level fishing kayak.

"But of course, if you're like me, a 'traditional' sit-on-top kayak fisherman, there's going to be a serious mental shift here," Bramel laughed. "You're going to be rowing. Facing forward."

But after dry land sitting in the thing when an NRS rep brought one to the Canoe Kentucky exhibit space at a boat show, he liked it. As stated earlier, a lot.

"The comfort level is awesome. The view from that high is superior. Fishing from the bow position...are you kidding me? Mega cool. And as long as you and your fishing partner are winning to swap seats often...perfect." And there's one particular thing in his mind when comparing fishing from this raft as compared to a sit-on-top fishing kayak. "The NRS rep said she wouldn't hesitate to push the Approach 120 through Class 3 rapids," said Bramel. "If that's the case, this is going to open up a lot of water for us." So in short, there's much to think about here. Could there be a raft, maybe even an NRS Approach 120 in your future?

THE BONAFIDE RVR119: OUR MOST FEATURE-RICH KAYAK TO DATE

A fully-loaded bow:

Moving back from the bow, we have included our Boss Strap rod and paddle stager. Grooves in the Boss Strap allow rod tips to be easily organized and it is elevated off the deck enough to slide a paddle blade right underneath for quick storage. Just below the boss strap you will find an access plate to get into the hull of the boat for rigging purposes including lights, wiring, mounting. There is another plate on the stern for the same reason.

Triple Action Bow Strap:

One feature that is unique to the RVR119 is our brand new Triple Action Bow Strap, this strap is totally unique in kayak fishing and allows you to do three key things: 1. You can use the strap to help pull the kayak, 2. You can use the strap to tie down dry bags and boxes quickly and easily, 3. It can be used to organize and transport your fishing rods to and from the water.

An extremely stable (realtively dry) deck:

The deck of the RVR is designed specifically to drain water effectively and efficiently. The deck is sloped back to scupper holes. The key here is to get water off the deck as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of water weight causing the kayak to become unstable. The deck also features ample groove tracks for mounting gear and traction pads for comfortable standing.

Built to compete:

In fact we have included a dedicated slot for a 26” Ketch Measuring board to rest right in front of the paddler. The Ketch Board slots in the kayak are angled down slightly so the fish's nose quickly finds its way to the end of the measuring board. The slots also allow the board to be raised off the deck so your feet can remain underneath the board itself.

Dry Valuables and Room to Grow:

The popular Bonafide Dry Pod has been integrated into the RVR. The Dry Pod is removable and can house a full fish finder system. Simply attach your graph to the top of the pod, batter within and transducer below and you are ready to go. This also allows you to take the pod out for safety if you leave your kayak on a trailer. If you own another Bonafide Kayak and have your Dry Pod rigged with a fish finder/transducer, it will fit perfectly here too.

Flexibiltiy & Comfort:

For your feet, we have incorporated our SS foot braces which are aluminum and can lock or unlock to get you the perfect positioning. If you decide to add a stern mounted motor, simply use our Steering Kit accessory on the dual action foot braces to allow for foot turning control.

We mean EXTREME Flexibility:

On the gunnel of the kayak, we have strategically placed inserts for quick mount of the YakAttack RotoGrip or LockNLoad Track Base. The LockNLoad base opens up a wide range of mounts that makes this area extremely customizable.

Just behind the stern tank well area you will see four pad eyes (two per side) on the stern gunnel for additional bungee attachment points for those extended or overnight trips down the river.

On the very back of the deck you will find inserts for attaching our RVR Stern Mounting Plate for easily attaching a stern electric motor over the anchor system.

And EXTREME Comfort:

Moving back to the seat. The seat is hand-sewn right at our factory in North Carolina, USA and is extremely comfortable. The seat is adjustable forward or aft 4 inches so you can trim out the RVR specifically to the paddlers size. There is plenty of storage space underneath the seat as well and grooved slots in the kayak for rod butts to rest for transport or for stowing away in rapids (in conjunction with the Triple Action Bow Strap). Just to the right of the seat on the kayak sidewall is the skeg control handle. You can simply turn the handle back and forth to engage or disengage the skeg. The skeg system will automatically retract when going over rocks or trees in the water with the integrated spring system.

Directly behind the seat, there is a motor battery mounting area with multiple ways to secure it to the deck of the kayak. On both sides of this storage area are groove tracks for accessories or the Bonafide Sidekick Wheel System.

The RVR stern deck was built around the YakAttack BlackPak Pro system, every size (13” x 13”, 13” x 16” and 16” x 16”) will fit just right. The bungee includes OmniHooks to attach the BlackPak easily to the RVR.

Paddling for a Purpose

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing color, and the paddling conditions on the Kentucky River are ideal. Over the last few weeks, we've been able to take full advantage of the perfect fall paddling weather, as we host Paddle for a Purpose, a six week fundraising event in support of local conservation organization, Woods and Waters Land Trust.

Each Sunday, Paddle for a Purpose participants join us on a different section of the Lower Kentucky River. The fundraiser started in late September, with a paddle in downtown Frankfort and a kickoff event at River View Park. Since then, the group has paddled sections of river in northern Franklin County and southern Owen County, enjoying riverside lectures from local environmental experts along the way.

Yesterday's paddle included a section in Monterey, Kentucky, where paddlers made their way down a rural stretch of the Kentucky River, with farmland on both sides. After locking through Lock & Dam #3, the group stopped on a sunny beach to enjoy a talk with hydrologist Lee Colten on the importance of the Lower Kentucky River watershed, we well as with Jennifer Turner, who gave a talk on the White Oak Initiative in Kentucky.

The following three Sundays will include paddling trips in Gratz, Worthville, and the final stretch of the Kentucky River in Carrollton, before it meets the Ohio River.

Sponsored by Expree Credit Union, and facilitated by Canoe Kentucky, all funds generated by this event are given directly to Woods and Waters Land Trust to support their work in permanently protecting land in the Lower Kentucky River watershed. Through participating in Paddle for a Purpose, paddlers are given the opportunity to see the places that the organization is working to protect.

Time to hit the water- do you have your lifejacket?

May 21-27 is National Safe Boating Week, a week dedicated to bringing awareness to the importance of safety and responsibility on the water. One of the simplest and most effective things you can do while boating is wearing a lifejacket.

Lifejackets save lives, but only if they are worn. Each year, 75% of the people who died in a boating incident drowned because they weren’t wearing a lifejacket. We want everyone here on Elkhorn Creek to have a fun and safe time, and make great memories on the water.

Forgot a lifejacket or bringing an extra buddy along? We have a Life Jacket Loaner Station at the Knight's Bridge/American Whitewater Access on Elkhorn Creek, available to make sure that every boater, no matter their age or size, can have access to a free life jacket to borrow to keep them safe on the water. Please utilize this great resource and return lifejackets after borrowing.

While it is important to have a lifejacket while boating, it is equally as important to ensure that it fits you properly. All buckles and zippers should be secured and straps tightened snugly, and the user should fall into the weight range that the lifejacket is rated for.

Registering Your Canoe or Kayak in Kentucky

New kayak added to your fleet? Congrats! You have lots of fun days on the water ahead of you. Before heading out, we highly recommend registering your new boat. This step is often overlooked, and can be a frustrating process without the correct information. Never fear- we are here to help!

First, you'll want to register your new boat with the manufacturer for warranty purposes. Simply head to the manufacturer website and scroll to the bottom of the page. In most instances, you'll find a link to "Register Your Kayak." Fill out your information and bam- you're registered!

Planning to add a motor to your canoe or kayak? In the state of Kentucky, you are required to register any mechanically powered boat at your county clerk's office. Mechanically powered includes gas powered outboard motors, trolling motors, or electric powered motors. Let us know if are planning to add a motor to your boat, or may in the future. We can help make this process a breeze!

Upon purchasing a new boat here at Canoe Kentucky, we will provide you with a purchase receipt and statement of origin. We are able to notarize your paperwork here in our store, so you will be the most prepared person at the county clerk's office!

Generate, Conserve, Contribute

Did you know that Canoe Kentucky is a Net Zero business? What does this mean? How did we choose this route? What did the process look like? Let's take a look.

In 2021, we installed a solar system on our Peaks Mill shop, producing clean energy from beautiful sunshine. Rather than a battery storage system, we are connected to the main electricity grid, feeding any excess energy we produce back to the utility company. For example, on a hot, sunny summer day, our solar system could produce 100 kW/hours of energy. In that same day, our shop may consume 50 kW/hours. The extra 50 kW/hours of energy goes back to the utility company, who can use that energy anywhere it's needed.

Then, on a shorter, colder winter day, we may only generate 25 kW/hours, but consume 50 kW/hours. The utility company provides us with those extra kW/hours we had banked in the sunny summertime. At the end of the year, if the system is set up correctly, we will have produced as much energy as we consumed- designating Canoe Kentucky as a Net Zero business.

We began this process in January 2021, starting by interviewing three different solar companies and weighing our options. We ultimately chose Solar Energy Solutions out of Lexington, as they created an impressive and comprehensive report on what we needed and had the most competitive price. Our install began in May 2021 and took about 2 weeks. Solar Energy Solutions installed the panels, setting them at specific angles to get the best sun exposure, in addition to squirrel guards, a netting that protects the underside of the panels. Two boxes were installed on the side of our building that direct the energy to our shop, as well as back to the grid. The system was properly labeled, as per local code, to indicate to any emergency personnel that we are connected to a solar system in case of an emergency.

Once the system was installed, Solar Energy Solutions contacted the local inspector and had the system approved and certified. The utility company then came and swapped out our meter for a net meter, which allows energy to flow in and out of the system. After that, our system was live and we could let the sun do the work!

We have an app on our phones ( example image below ) that allows us to track the energy we are producing- other than that, this system is totally hands off. You don't even know it's there- until tree trimming season, to keep the sun shining bright on the panels!

We decided to go solar for a few reasons. Most importantly, producing clean energy is one way that we can care for our environment. If we can do one small thing to help, then we should- we all should!

Secondly, after putting pencil to paper and researching tax incentives and other discounts, we discovered that the solar system we designed would pay itself off in about 10-12 years- a pretty good rate of return on any investment. The system pays for itself as our local utility company buys back energy at a rate of 100%, which means if we produce x, they buy x . Some utility companies only buy back at percentages, meaning you produce x , they buy half of x .

Lastly, our decision to go solar has become another interesting chapter in the Canoe Kentucky story. Like any small business, our story is very important to us, and we want our dedicated customers to know that we are in this business for the right reasons, and that we practice what we preach about environmental responsibility.

Have we been happy with our decision? YES! We are proud of the fact that we are doing our part. We are able to produce energy for our own needs as well as give energy back, at certain times of the year, so others can use it. This has also been an investment for the future- the next owners of Canoe Kentucky, whether family or otherwise, won't have to worry about the business' utility costs. We would absolutely do it again and are happy to advise anyone, homeowner or business owner, who is considering the same path.

Understanding Water Levels on Elkhorn Creek

As the paddling season kicks off, it’s important to understand how to interpret water conditions before hitting the creek. Conditions are relative to each waterway, so we strongly encourage you to understand the ideal water conditions of any given stream before going paddling.

Head to the Water Levels tab on our website to find all the tools you’ll need to check on Elkhorn Creek water conditions for the day. You’ll even find a live cam to get a current view of the creek right behind our shop!

There you will also find a water level gauge from the USGS, showing real time readings of the water level, or how high the water is on Elkhorn Creek. You can use our water level interpreter to understand what the level means for your paddling experience. Check out this post for a breakdown of what each color on the water level interpreter actually means.

Do I Need A Trailer?

As kayaks have continued to get bigger, and better, of course, we have seen many paddlers going away from roof topping their boats to hauling them in the bed of a pickup truck or on a trailer. We are fans of both, but not everyone has a pickup truck, and not everyone is hauling just one or two boats; many more than that is almost impossible! Trailers are quickly becoming the best solution and one we are very supportive of.

Do I need a trailer? A trailer is much, much easier for getting your boat to and from the water. A trailer allows you to leave all your paddling gear loaded and ready to go for the next time (we do recommend loosening your straps when you leave it for any period of time as the kayak will "flex" and tighten the straps too tight). A trailer allows you to take your buddies along with you and haul more boats. A trailer does involve some practice driving with, especially backing, but, don't let this scare you! Backing can be easily learned, and worse case, these trailers are so light they can be unhooked and hand backed.

We carry in stock trailers from Yakima and Genesis. The above trailer is a new, two level trailer from Yakima called the EasyRider (Approx. $3,399.00). It is perfect for hauling one to four kayaks, and you can add all sorts of accessories like cargo boxes, bike racks, paddle holders, etc. Many of these accessories are available through Yakima or Malone, both partners of ours, but, any accessories are also DIY. We are happy to advise you on any of those, for example paddle holders, fishing rod lockers, etc.

We also carry two different trailers from Genesis out of Holland, Michigan. The one above is the bunk, two kayak version. This is a great option for those that can back right near the water as well as want to haul only one or two kayaks. The model below is sold at CKY with two cross bars (Approx. $1,399) and with four cross bars (Approx. $1.499.00), as shown. The two cross bar model can hold up to 4 kayaks, but most haul two. The four cross bar model is designed for 4 kayaks, but we have seen 6. We are huge Genesis Trailers fans because, one, they are no bones about it, no frills, but awesomely priced, and two, they have great customer service and great after sale support.

Stay where you play! Now that's not a bad idea!

Coming off the heals of our already popular GLAMPING SITES, located on the Elkhorn Creek... and getting some much deserved attention this winter... those details in an upcoming newsletter...we are proud to announce our first Vacation Rental By Owner; "An Old Fashioned Stave-Cation".

PHOTOS COMING SOON! But, imagine staying right on the banks of the Elkhorn Creek in our coz and inviting early 20th century home. Our home as been completely remodeled and boasts 2 bedrooms each with queen beds, and one bedroom with a twin bunk bed. There are two bathrooms in the house, each with oversized walk in tile showers.

The living room is very comfortable with couches and an antique checker table that was moved from the Mayflower Hotel, a historic hotel on the Elkhorn that was razed in the 1960's. The centerpiece of the house is the live edge bar top surrounded by barn wood leading in to the comfortable and open kitchen. Enjoy our favorite bourbon cocktail recipes which adorn the walls, and mix a drink to enjoy on either the covered front porch or on the creek bank located out the back of the house.

Booking "An Old Fashioned Stave-Cation" will be done via the VRBO platform, and it will be available beginning late December 2021. Rates will be on the VRBO site, and will require a minimum 2 night stay in season, May though October. Our home is perfect for two couples or one family of 4 to 6.

Canoe, SUP and Kayak prices are going up!

Everything is getting more expensive, and the outdoor industry is not immune. Canoe, SUP and kayak prices are going up in 2022! But, you are lucky, because we took the bold move of bringing in more inventory for our winter shopping season that usual, so everything that we currently have is on 2021 pricing, rather than the price hikes that will happen in January.

"How much can I expect the prices to go up?" Honestly, we do not know at this time. We do know that one example has been given to us by Crescent Kayaks, who has released their 2022 prices, which like all manufacturers, are subject to change. We know for a fact that the 2021 CK1 Venture, one of our most popular sellers, was $899.00; for 2022 it is $999.00. Likewise, the Crescent Lite Tackle, another very popular offering in 2021, was $999.00; 2022, $1,099.00. So this comes to about a 10% increase.

Other popular brands we carry, like Nucanoe, Bonafide and Native, have announced pricing with similar increases. Jackson Kayaks, still our number one selling brand, has not released their 2022 price increases, but they have announced to dealers that they will be announcing them first of next week. We would have to assume that they will fall in the 10% to 15% increase range.

If you buy now through Christmas, we ware allowed to offer 2021 pricing. But as soon as we get to the calendar turning over another year, and we enter in to 2022, we will be required to honor 2022 pricing only. We are contractually committed to our manufacturers to do this.

So that means NOW IS THE TIME! It may not be ideal for you to pick up your new fishing kayak or family canoe around Christmas... a bummer you may not be able to use it for a few months, although winter time paddling is REALLY COOL, so don't miss the chance! But this is the time to plan and get ahead of the continual increases. We have a huge inventory right now, so color options, accessories and models are, as of today, plentiful. That can change at any moment !.

What do the colors in the Water Level Interpreter mean?

So what does our "Water Level Interpreter" mean for your experience? We get this question quite often, so we wanted to give you an idea of what each level means if you're not familiar with our creek!

First things first, the descriptions, ie. "Caution Needed" and "Extreme Caution", etc. only pertain to rental trips on the Elkhorn Creek's "Fun Float" or "All Day Adventure". They do not apply to any guided trips, including the "Whitewater Hairraiser", or any Kentucky River Trips. These trips use different gauges and are determined on a trip-by-trip basis. If your trip is cancelled do to a unsafe level for these trips, you will be contacted individually by CKY staff. Additionally, they only apply to canoes, kayaks and rafts on the Elkhorn Creek. Tubes are not recommended by Canoe Kentucky. To learn why, READ MORE HERE!

What goes into the creation of these different zones? Well, not only does the water level come into play, but also the cubic-feet-per second (CFS), or the flow. These levels have been created using over 44 years of Elkhorn Creek experience to create the best and safest possible experience for our guests.

ORANGE - 2.0ft to 2.5ft

LOW! When the water is low you can expect to have to get out and help your boat over the shallow spots. How many times you have to get out depends on how well you read the water, but on average, you will get stuck 8 to 10 times. There are many deep pools to keep the paddling fun, but low water can make for a longer day on the water with more work involved. You must plan on getting in the water many times, so wear proper footwear. No rafts or tandem kayaks available at these levels.

GREEN - 2.5ft to 3.75ft

This family/beginner friendly level that the creek has to offer. At these conditions, the water level is high enough that you don't have to worry about doing a lot of walking but is low enough that the experience needed to navigate is minimal! At this level, the CFS is also on the lower side, which means each trip will move a bit slower than at higher water level conditions. This water level is also a favorite among anglers and fishermen! The lower the water, the less area the fish have to disperse, so it does a good job of concentrating the different species of bass into smaller areas. Canoes and kayaks are best at these levels, but rafts are still available until it gets below 3.0 ft. This rule is also true for tandem kayaks.

BLUE - 3.75ft to 4.5ft

This level is another popular level, as it offers a different experience on the creek compared to the GREEN level! This is still a great level for novice boaters, but choice of craft is more important. Rafts are a great option for families and small groups of 2 to 6 due to a faster flow! At this level, we usually do not recommend bringing out children under the age of 6 years old, as the faster flow of the water requires a bit stronger swimming abilities than children younger than 6-year old's usually possess! The trip will go by quicker, as the flow at this level is faster-moving. Fishing is also usually still great at this level, especially in the spring and fall. Canoes and kayaks are a great option for those with paddling experience.

YELLOW - 4.5ft to 5ft

This level is where more intermediate/advanced experience is needed if you're looking to rent or take out a canoe or kayak! We also encourage raft rentals at this level, which allows families, and those with less experience to still get out and enjoy the creek! At this level, boat control is much more important for canoes and kayaks as the speed of the water is quicker than our normal spring/summer conditions, and "strainers" (trees and branches that can catch onto boats and people) are much more likely to come into play. Rafts just bounce off these obstacles, while they can cause flipping and pinning issues for canoes and kayaks.

RED - 5ft AND ABOVE

At this level, we suspend all rentals to customers for their safety! When the Elkhorn Creek gets above 5ft in height on the gauge, the CFS is extremely fast, requiring an advanced level of boat control, and usually has many other obstacles, such as the strainers, mentioned before. We also discontinue shuttling for those who own their own boats at this level. If it is not safe enough for us to rent, we don't feel it is safe enough for anyone to paddle. Fishing is not recommended at this level!
